FLOORING OPTIONS

Flooring Options for EveryoneBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Beals]Christine Beals
There are a plethora of types of floors that are available to homeowners today. Carpet, hardwood floors, laminate flooring, cork, bamboo, and ceramic tile are some of the most common that are readily available to consumers today. Many households have many types of flooring as well - leaving even more questions about what type for what room. Just hardwood floors alone come in many varieties and types: distressed & hand scraped, engineered wood floors, and glueless floating wood - those options alone can leave one pondering what to pick.
Let's start with carpet. Carpet normally brings luxury, fashion and comfort to mind. Carpet is often the preferred flooring for bedrooms and living rooms. It's quiet, insulates well from cold and the color options are numerous. There are many materials and styles available; so many that you may need a little help choosing. Carpet can be selected based on fiber, density and texture. So like soft, some like a little firmer. Regardless of your preferences many options are out there.
Although it may initially be confusing when it comes to choosing hardwood floors, they can be very attractive and can really add some appeal, and worth to your home. First, you should decide what type of finished look you want to achieve. If you're going after a modern or contemporary look, you may want to lean towards a type of wood hat has a cleaner look with less texture and grain such as Maple, Birch, or Cherry. If you prefer a more casual or rustic look, then you may want to consider an Oak or Pine.
Laminate flooring was first introduced into the US in 1982. Since then the sector has experienced growth of up to 20%, making laminate the fastest growing floor type in the country. The appeal lies not only in its aesthetic value of its representation of real hardwood, but also due to its incredible durability and ease of maintenance.
Ceramic floor tile is an elegant and stylish flooring material whose true origins remain unknown, even today. Ceramic floor tile can come in virtually any color and is tough and durable that it can actually last as long as your home can stand. Ceramic floor tile is actually the oldest form of flooring material known to man, aside from primitive use of dirt and bear skins. Speaking of dirt, creating ceramic floor tile is simply a combination of different clays that have been mixed with water, designed, shaped and then fired in special kilns. You could basically consider ceramic floor tile nothing more than flame broiled mud. Nevertheless it's a sturdy, stylish and dependable choice for flooring.
Regardless of the room you're redecorating or the flooring you're looking into buying, there are many worthy and fun options to pick from.

WHAT CARPET IS MADE OF

Understanding The Different Types of Carpet FibersBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bill_Prudehome]Bill Prudehome
Carpeting can be a major purchase for your home. You want it to have a long life, look good, and be comfortable to walk on. Before you choose your carpet, it is important to understand the different types of carpet fibers that are available and their advantages and disadvantages.
The type of fiber used to make a carpet determines its visual appearance, overall durability, feel, resistance to stains - and the cost.
Synthetic materials are the most popular of the fibers used in today’s carpets accounting for about 97% of all fiber used. Synthetic materials are adaptable into a variety of styles and applications. They are generally easier to maintain than natural fibers.
Common materials used for carpet fibers are:
Nylon
Extremely durable, stain and mildew resistant and static free, Nylon is an excellent choice for all levels of traffic and applications. It maintains its fiber height allowing it to withstand the weight of heavy furniture and people. Nylon is dyed during the production of the fiber thereby avoiding any color run after it is produced
Nylon accounts for approximately 90% of all residential carpeting. Expect square yard prices from $10 for Cut Piles increasing to $30 for Multi-Level Loops.
Olefin (polypropylene)
Controlling the commercial market with an 80% share, Olefin is the least expensive of the man made fibers. A very strong fiber, Olefin is resistant to moisture and mildew and is easy to clean and maintain. It is an indoor and outdoor fiber and is the common fiber used for artificial turf.
Polyester
Less expensive than nylon or wool, Polyester fiber creates a very attractive carpet.
Commonly used in soft loop or Berber loop carpets, Polyester is a fiber that is used to make a luxury product. Crush resistant, available in a vast array of dynamic colors and its resistance to fading provides Polyester fibers with a lot of advantages. Polyester fibers are easy to clean and are resistant to water based stains.
Acrylic
Acrylic is the closest synthetic fiber to wool. Because of its wool like attributes, it is used extensively in Velvet and Plush Level Loop carpets. Acrylic fibers offer the appearance and feel of wool at a much lower cost and has the advantage over wool of being moisture and mildew resistant. The Acrylic fiber resists crushing, stains and will not fade from sunlight.
Acrylic fibers are not suitable for high traffic areas, such as hallways, family rooms, and stairs as they are a high wear product. Hence, they provide a perfect carpet in master and guest bedrooms.
Wool
When it comes to luxury and performance, no other fiber compares to Wool. Wool carpets maintain their height; they are ultra soft with a feel that is incomparable.
Wool fibers are easily died or you can choose natural colors of off white to black, and they repel water. They are very easy to clean and have an exceptionally long life. Wool fibers are usually used in cut pile and textured carpets.
Wool is one of the most expensive of the natural fibers and much more than synthetic fiber carpets. Wool carpets are also less resistant to moisture than synthetic fiber carpets.
Blends
The aforementioned four fiber types are often combined in a many variations to produce carpets that take the best qualities of each fiber type to produce a group of exceptional finished products.
For the luxurious look and comfort of wool with the durability of nylon, consider a Wool/Nylon blend.
Other common blends include Acrylic/Olefin and Nylon/Olefin. Although less expensive these blends are usually subject to staining.
PET
If a “green” environment is part of your criteria then you may want to consider the purchase of a carpet made of PET fibers.
Recycled plastics, primarily soda containers, are the basis for polyethylene terephthalate or as it is more commonly known in the industry PET. Fibers made from PET are not as plush or soft to the feel as other synthetic fibers but they are very durable, water and static resistant and offers extremely good value.

COFFEE ON CARPET

Learn How to Remove Coffee From CarpetBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Niv_Orlian]Niv Orlian
When you crawl out of bed in the morning, a cup of coffee is the only thing that gives you the energy to the face the new day. Unfortunately, while you are still dragging yourself around your home, trying to get ready for work or to run some errands, it is very likely that you will spill that cup of coffee, before you've even had one sip. If you do drop that cup, don't panic. Even if you have a light colored carpet, you can still remove coffee from carpet. Follow the steps below and you will know how to start removing coffee stains from carpet.
For this first step, you will need to get a paper towel or a clean cloth. Once you have them, quick pat the area so that it can start the process of removing the coffee stains . Keep daubing the stain so that the cloth can get maximum absorption. Never rub a stain as it can cause the liquid to be pushed deeper into the carpet fibers.
Do some research and try to find out what stain remover is best when removing coffee stains. The reason for this step is that different carpets are made with different materials. If you have a natural carpet (grass or wool) a stain remover can damage it. If you are unsure about what to do, a professional may be needed to do the job correctly.
Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water and spray a small amount on the stain. For a different method, you can wet a sponge and use it to pat the coffee stain. Get a bowl and add ¼ teaspoon of a mild solution that won't bleach your fibers. You can also use a shampoo for the carpets.
After you have selected the cleaning solution, you can add it to one liter of water. Make sure that the water is warm. Blend the mixture until it is completely mixed. To remove coffee from carpet, wet a clean, white cloth in the newly mixed solution and then put the cloth directly on the stain.
Using the back of a spoon apply a slight pressure to the cloth and stain. Move the spoon around so that you have covered the entire cloth with the gentle massage. Remove the cloth from your carpet and apply a spray of warm water to the stain. You once again have the option of using a spray bottle or a wet sponge for this step. Pat the area to transfer any left over coffee stains to the sponge.
Remove any excess liquid by daubing the wet spots with a clean rag or heavy duty paper towel. Do not rub the spot. Rubbing can cause more damage as you try to remove coffee from carpet. The last step to follow when removing coffee stains from carpet is to allow the carpet to dry. Using another clean white cloth or paper towel, you will cover the entire area that is wet.
Get a plastic bag and lay that over the cloth. Now you can use a heavy object like a large book or statue so that it can apply pressure to the spot for a few hours. You can even let them sit on the spot overnight. When you remove the objects, you will find that you have effectively removed the stain.
Never let a stain sit for long periods of time. If a stain is not cleaned up immediately, it may be difficult or impossible to remove unless you call in a professional. Although, they are likely to get the job done well a carpet specialist will cost a lot of money. You don't want to have to call them to clean one small area of your carpet when you can easily do it yourself.

Carpet Padding

Carpet PaddingBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Malega]Michael Malega
Carpets can be exploited to provide homes with comfortableness and warmth. One of the prime reasons for a carpet to have this ability lies in the building of the carpet. This ability will also extend to the rug padding. While most people only look at the surface of the carpet, the cushioning which is present plays an crucial part in the life of a carpet. While the carpets which you can bargain from unlike places will have dissimilar surface looks this is only the first step in purchasing your carpets. The next step is to see how the carpet cushioning is. The condition of the padding is the cause which sets the cost for the carpet.
Even though there are standards set for the manufacture of carpets and rug cushioning you will still need to look at these carpets individually before you select to bargain one. Once you have seen how the surface of the carpeting is like caliber wise your next step is to check out the padding. In most carpets you will find one of Seven unlike carpet padding types.
These types will include frothed foam, rebond, waffle rubber, foam padding, Berber padding, and fiber rug padding. Even though these unlike materials are all located on carpets to help the carpet keep its natural state there are some differences to be found. These differences can for the most part spell out if you are provision on purchase a carpet which can be reasoned as an investing or a carpet which will turn out to be a money drainer.
To give you an idea of the differences in carpet cushioning you will find that waffle cushioning is generally made from rubber with a type of clay binding. In addition the carpets which have this type of padding will not last as long due to the mediocre construction of the carpet padding.
The best type of carpet cushioning which you will find in carpets these days is one which is known as frothed foam. The material which is used in the building of this cushioning is that of dimmed urethane. The padding can be found in thicknesses of about 5/16ths to 7/16ths of an inch thick.
As this rug padding is very lasting you should realize that having a rug made from this material will allow the carpeting to last for a long time. Having said this rug cushioning which is made from this material is not one that you will find on every carpet. For this ground you should think about the main priority for you... to learn more on this subject, please check our web site by clicking on our link below...

LAYING VINYL FLOORING

Laying Vinyl Flooring
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andy_Lewis]Andy Lewis

Good preparation is essential for a trouble-free installation. Most vinyls can be laid on concrete, timber, stone and many other sub-floors, which have been suitably prepared. Site conditions must comply with the relevant national regulations.

Vinyl is not suitable for external installation or unheated locations but it can be used with under-floor heating providing it is switched off for 48 hours before and after laying (the maximum permitted surface temperature is 27°C (81°F).

Tiles, adhesive and sub-floor must be allowed to stabilise to a consistent temperature between 18° - 27°C (64° - 81°F) for a period of 24 hours before and after installation.

Careful sub-floor preparation is vital for an excellent floor appearance and good tile adhesion. The sub-floor must be hard, smooth, clean, dry, free from defects and fit for purpose. A suitable levelling compound should be used to ensure that no irregularities show through to the surface of the finished floor.

In all cases, the sub-floor must be sufficiently dry and the relative humidity checked to ensure it is not greater than 75% by using a suitable moisture test method.

Direct-to-earth concrete and stone sub-floors must havean effective damp proof membrane. Follow manufacturer's detailed instructions for the installation of a surface DPM and the use of levelling compound.

2.1 New Concrete

Must be allowed sufficient time to dry thoroughly as it will contain a high percentage of residual moisture. Apply levelling compound.

2.2 Old Concrete

Must be cleaned of all paint, grease, wax and any other foreign matter. Apply levelling compound.

2.3 Old Resilient Floors

Existing tiles should be lifted and adhesive residues removed by scraping. No solvents should be used to remove old adhesive. Apply levelling compound.

N.B. As a safety precaution when lifting vinyl asbestostiles the appropriate safety measures should be adhered to.

2.4 Terrazzo/Stone

Repair worn or damaged areas. Degrease and apply levelling compound.

2.5 Timber

Must be overlaid with minimum 6mm (¼") exterior or flooring grade plywood, which must be suitably secured. A suitable feathering compound should be used to smooth out joints.

Only the recommended adhesives should be used - others will not give adequate performance and may fail.

3.1 Recommended Adhesives

3.1.1 SF Adhesive

SF Adhesive is a water-based acrylic adhesive recommended for all areas except those subject to heat or moisture.

3.1.2 Universal 2-Part Adhesive

Recommended for all areas subject to some heat and moisture variations as may be found adjacent to sunny windows and shower rooms. Universal is entirely solvent-free and classified as EC1 with respect to very low VOC emissions.

3.2 Usage of adhesives

Follow the instructions on the packaging. Spread adhesive evenly using a trowel with notch size 1.5 x 5mm (UK), a Euro A2 (1.8 x 1.2 x 1.65 mm) or V notch

1/16th" x 1/16th" x 1/16th" (USA). Do not use worn trowels. Only spread sufficient adhesive that can be covered within 60 minutes.

Tiles should be rolled with a 45kg (100lbs) roller as soon as possible after laying and before the adhesive sets - timing will depend on site conditions but is generally 1-2 hours after spreading the adhesive.

Always clean away excess adhesive before it is allowed to dry - use a soft cloth moistened with Adhesive Remover. Dried adhesive can be removed by carefully scraping it off the tile, or by using a 3M blue pad moistened with Adhesive Remover.
